Vice-Chancellor Emeritus of Bujumbura Christian University
The story of Bujumbura Christian University (BCU) is inseparable from the vision, courage, and dedication of Canon Donald Werner. In the early days, Canon Werner shared his dream of creating a Christian university with the late Archbishop Bernard Ntahoturi. The Archbishop, inspired by the idea, consulted with fellow bishops of the Anglican Church of Burundi who endorsed it wholeheartedly. In a remarkable gesture of support, the Bishop of Bujumbura offered the building of the old cathedral as the very first campus of the university, which at that time opened with a single faculty—the Faculty of Theology.
Canon Donald Werner is widely recognized as the visionary behind BCU. The very idea of establishing an academic institution rooted in Christian values, academic excellence, and service to the Church of Burundi began with him. What started as a seed in his heart grew into a vibrant and expanding university that continues to serve the nation and train leaders for the future.
A Vision Born From Deep Commitment

From the earliest stages, Canon Werner imagined a university that would empower young Burundians through quality education, strong ethical foundations, and spiritual formation. He worked tirelessly to shape this vision, laying the intellectual, administrative, and spiritual foundations of the institution.
BCU began with a very small staff and minimal resources, but with a clear intention to grow steadily. The university that stands today—expanded, respected, and full of promise—is a living testimony to Canon Werner’s dedication, faith, and unwavering commitment.
Continuous Engagement Even From Afar
Even after returning to the United Kingdom, Canon Donald’s devotion to BCU never diminished. In fact, his involvement often deepened. He remained central to the university’s development, offering strategic guidance, administrative wisdom, and pastoral encouragement.
His contribution as the key fundraiser of BCU cannot be overstated. Through his international networks, personal advocacy, and relentless effort, he mobilised friends, churches, and global partners to support the university’s growth. His deep belief in the mission of BCU inspired many to contribute generously and consistently.
A Teacher at Heart
Canon Werner made regular trips back to Burundi to lecture, mentor students, and reconnect with the community he helped build. His students valued him not only for the academic knowledge he imparted, but also for the humanity and compassion that shaped his teaching.
He taught with:
- compassion,
- wisdom,
- patience, and
- a genuine love for people.
For many, his classroom became a place of encouragement and transformation. He made every student feel valued, seen, and capable of succeeding.
A Man of Courage and Integrity
Colleagues and friends describe him as a man of remarkable courage. He consistently invited international lecturers to come to BCU—even in times of difficulty—ensuring that students continued to receive a high-quality and diverse education.
One of his most impactful initiatives was the introduction of daily lunches for theology students. He recognised that many students could not afford the expensive food in the area. Some struggled to stay awake during lectures due to hunger and fatigue, and others missed afternoon classes entirely.
By introducing a shared meal, he removed a major barrier to effective learning and deepened the sense of community on campus.
A Heart for Theological Education
Canon Werner has always believed that a strong church depends on well-trained servants of God. His passion for theological education drove him to advocate tirelessly for student scholarships. Those with financial limitations found in him a defender, a mentor, and a friend.
This passion later inspired the creation of Love Burundi, a charity dedicated to supporting theology students in need. Canon Werner envisioned a future where no young person would be unable to answer God’s call because of financial barriers. Today, Love Burundi continues to strengthen the Church of Burundi through its compassion and determination.
A Legacy of Faithfulness

Despite advancing age and health challenges, Canon Donald Werner made the courageous decision to travel to Burundi to attend the graduation ceremony held last November. His presence deeply moved students, staff, alumni, and partners. It reminded everyone of his profound love for BCU and the mission he continues to champion.
Even today, he actively encourages individuals, churches, and communities in the UK to support BCU. Through his advocacy, many new friends and partners of BCU have emerged, contributing in meaningful ways to the university’s ongoing development.
A Blessing to BCU and to Burundi
Bujumbura Christian University honours Canon Werner not only as its founder but also as a father figure whose vision, courage, and compassion shaped the institution from the very beginning. His life is a beautiful example of Christian leadership—marked by generosity, humility, devotion, and unwavering faith.
We pray that God grants him long life, renewed strength, and continued prosperity in every aspect of his calling.
May God richly bless Canon Donald Werner.
