On Friday, November 21st, 2025, Bujumbura Christian University celebrated a historic milestone as it held a multi-cohort graduation ceremony for several classes of bachelor’s degree students from Theology, Economics, Information Technology, and Languages and Communication programs. The ceremony brought together graduates from cohorts dating as far back as 2020 to those completing in 2025, marking one of the largest academic celebrations in the university’s recent history.

The event began with a dignified academic procession accompanied by the vibrant and symbolic rhythms of the Burundi drums. Following the procession, the opening prayer was led by The Rt. Rev. Eraste Bigirimana, former Chair of the Board of Trustees, setting a solemn and reflective tone for the celebration.
The devotion that followed was led by The Rev. Canon Donald K. Werner, Vice-Chancellor Emeritus and Guest of Honor. In his message, he exhorted the university leadership, the graduating students, and the entire community to remain firmly rooted in the Word of God and faithful to their calling. He reminded the congregation that the Word of God equips believers for every good service.
Canon Werner also expressed his deep joy at witnessing the remarkable progress BCU has made since its humble beginnings in the old Cathedral of Bujumbura under the leadership of Bishop Eraste. He noted that the university has grown significantly and encouraged BCU to continue growing in influence, impact, and commitment to resisting conformity to negative societal pressures since the word of God never changes.

The ceremony was honored by the presence of The Most Revd. Sixbert Macumi, the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Burundi and Chancellor of the university, together with The Rt. Rev. Pontien Ribakare, Chair of the Board of Trustees. Several other bishops and senior officials of the Anglican Church of Burundi attended, alongside vice-chancellors of partner universities, representatives of BCU’s partner institutions, and families and supporters of the graduates.

Throughout the ceremony, speeches delivered by the Vice-Chancellor and the Chair of the Board of Trustees celebrated the graduates’ perseverance and achievements. All speakers urged the new laureates to step confidently into their professional careers, pursue further studies where possible, and become leaders of positive transformation within their communities.

In his speech, Revd Canon Donald Werner spoke passionately about the work of Love Burundi, a UK-based charity dedicated to supporting theology students enrolled at Bujumbura Christian University (BCU). He highlighted the organization’s core mission: to enable students to pursue their theological education with greater ease, so that they may later serve and impact both the Church and the wider community.
He also shared how Christians in the UK have shown deep concern and generosity, raising funds to support the university’s vision. Seizing this moment, Revd Canon Werner extended a heartfelt appeal to others—beyond the UK—to join this effort and contribute to the training of future Church leaders in Burundi.

A representative of the graduating class also delivered an inspiring message, expressing gratitude to God, to the university leadership, and especially to the lecturers whose dedication and high standards shaped the students’ success. She encouraged parents to continue sending their children to study at BCU, highlighting the quality education and unique advantages offered by the institution.

Following the awarding of degree certificates, the best-performing students received special prizes in recognition of their outstanding academic accomplishments. In a significant and uplifting announcement, the Vice-Chancellor revealed that some of the top graduates would be offered employment opportunities at the university.

The ceremony concluded with a thanksgiving address and a final tribute through the traditional Burundi drums, before graduates, faculty, and guests gathered for an official photo session to commemorate the day.
BCU is committed to providing high-quality, faith-driven education that equips students to serve their communities with excellence, integrity, and a strong Christian foundation.
