Visit of the University of Gdańsk Delegation to BCU, 3–7 February 2026

A delegation from the University of Gdańsk (Poland) undertook an official visit to Bujumbura Christian University as part of the ongoing institutional partnership between the two universities. This visit followed a previous high-level institutional mission to Poland conducted by the President of the Board of Trustees of BCU, The Rt. Revd. Pontien Ribakare, and the Vice-Chancellor, Revd Dr Pascal Bigirimana. During that mission, extensive discussions were held on key areas of academic collaboration, including student and staff mobility, joint research initiatives, academic exchange programmes, capacity building, and the development of sustainable long-term cooperation frameworks. These engagements laid a strong foundation for the present visit, aimed at translating strategic discussions into concrete academic and institutional actions.

The delegation, comprising two academic staff members, Dr. Wioleta Gierszewska and Dr. Dominik Bień, arrived in Bujumbura on Monday, 2nd February 2026. Their visit aims to further strengthen the existing partnership between the two institutions by exploring new avenues for academic and institutional cooperation. In particular, the visit seeks to promote student and staff academic mobility, foster joint research initiatives, encourage knowledge and expertise exchange, and identify opportunities for capacity building and professional development. Through consultative meetings, academic conferences, and interactive engagements with BCU staff and students, the delegation is working to establish practical mechanisms for the effective implementation of collaborative programmes that will mutually benefit both universities.

The visit programme comprised two academic conferences and a series of consultative meetings with BCU academic and administrative staff. These activities are designed to create a dynamic platform for dialogue, enabling in-depth discussions on academic development, institutional governance, and collaborative strategies. They aim to foster strong institutional engagement, promote professional and scholarly exchange, encourage the sharing of best practices, and enhance mutual academic enrichment. Through these structured interactions, both institutions seek to strengthen their partnership, align their academic priorities, and develop sustainable frameworks for long-term cooperation.

The first academic conference, held on Tuesday, 3rd February 2026, focused on the academic and professional opportunities available to BCU students and staff at the University of Gdańsk. During this session, comprehensive presentations were delivered on a wide range of academic programmes, international mobility schemes, and collaborative research initiatives offered by the University of Gdańsk. Particular emphasis was placed on student exchange programmes, staff mobility opportunities, joint supervision of postgraduate research, and participation in international research projects. These presentations provided participants with clear and practical information on available pathways for academic advancement and professional development, thereby offering concrete prospects for enhanced student exchange, staff mobility, and joint scholarly production within the framework of the partnership.

The second conference, held on Wednesday, 4th February 2026, focused on methodological approaches to scientific article writing, with particular emphasis on academic integrity, ethical research practices, and effective strategies for preventing plagiarism. The session provided participants with practical guidance on structuring scholarly articles, developing coherent arguments, applying appropriate referencing styles, and adhering to international standards of academic publishing. In addition, the speakers offered a comprehensive overview of Poland’s historical and cultural context, thereby enriching participants’ understanding of the country’s academic traditions and societal values. This intercultural dimension contributed significantly to the enhancement of participants’ intercultural competence, global academic awareness, and capacity for international scholarly engagement.

Overall, this visit represents a major milestone in the ongoing process of strengthening institutional collaboration between Bujumbura Christian University (BCU) and the University of Gdańsk. It has not only reaffirmed the shared commitment of both institutions to academic excellence and international partnership but has also established a strong and sustainable foundation for future academic exchange, joint research cooperation, staff and student mobility, and comprehensive capacity-building initiatives. Through the strategic engagements and constructive dialogue fostered during this visit, both universities are well-positioned to implement impactful collaborative programmes that will contribute meaningfully to institutional development, scholarly advancement, and broader societal transformation.
