The Growing Impact of the University in the Church and Community of Makamba

On 2 August 2026, Bujumbura Christian University participated in the ordination service of 18 deacons in the Anglican Diocese of Makamba, held at Ebenezer Cathedral, Makamba. This significant ecclesiastical event provided an opportunity for BCU to strengthen its relationship with the Church and to celebrate its graduates joining the Christian ministry.

The University was represented by an official delegation comprising Rev. Noé Bukuru, Dean of the Faculty of Theology; Mr. Steve Sibomana, Director of Research and Marketing; Mr. Privat Nindorera, Communication Officer; Mr. Jedidja Isezerano, Assistant Lecturer in Economics; and Mrs. Jeanine Nibaruta, Cashier. The occasion was particularly meaningful for BCU as Mr. Ediel Ntungwanayo and Mr. Samuel Sabimbona, graduates of the Faculty of Theology, were among the newly ordained deacons.

Speaking on behalf of the University, Rev. Noé Bukuru conveyed the University’s congratulations to the Anglican Diocese of Makamba, the newly ordained deacons, and the entire Church community. He expressed BCU’s appreciation for witnessing the fruit of theological training through the ministry of its alumni and emphasized the important role of Christian higher education in preparing effective servants of the Church.

During his address, Rev. Bukuru encouraged parents, church leaders, and prospective students in Makamba to consider the University as a centre of excellence for higher education rooted in Christian principles. He highlighted the University’s active academic programmes, which provide opportunities for students to pursue quality education in diverse fields while maintaining a strong commitment to ethical and spiritual values. He further shared the University’s achievement of receiving a Certificate of Excellence from the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research, a recognition that reflects BCU’s commitment to academic quality, institutional performance, and continuous improvement within Burundi’s higher education sector.

As part of its institutional outreach strategy, the BCU delegation conducted an academic awareness and promotional activity within the church premises. The Communication and Marketing team engaged with members of the congregation, provided information about academic programmes, explained admission opportunities, distributed institutional materials, and responded to questions from prospective students, parents, and church members.

During the ceremony, the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Makamba recognized the important contribution of Bujumbura Christian University to the Anglican Church in Burundi. He noted that there are many BCU alumni in Makamba. He then encouraged members of the congregation to seek information about BCU through its graduates, whose service and achievements provide evidence of the University’s impact.

Through developing Christian leaders, advancing research and knowledge, and engaging with communities, BCU continues to contribute to the transformation of the Church and society.

Bujumbura Christian University extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Ediel Ntungwanayo, Mr. Samuel Sabimbona, and all the 18 newly ordained deacons.
